Adviser Training

Is the load just too much? a 3 hour module on gambling harm ahs been added. Might we have a minimum set that is manageable and then optional add ons – who is making these decisions?

General sense that it is too much atm – takes too long to get someone up and running. Chris ( Roberts) said once competences is set up fully, then we will be able to do a bit of a mix and match on what we need. View that we might push back and make sure that the basic is just that. Paul ( Hardy) noted that the training can be a disincentive – take too long on going through the modules and people lose confidence or interest before they start with clients.

Nick ( Morgan) said same problem – trainees totally bored with e-learning – people really learn from direct casework with clients. Looking at running clinics on topics and training people for those clinics – interesting to see how that works out. Feels it is up to us to do what suits us. Here is Nick’s current training plan

Angela (Kerr) said that anyone advising had to have gone through ALP and any supervisor needs training- under new LSA there is scrutiny so not sure if a local tailored system would work/pass LSA.

Lisa ( Kidston) Gambling harm is required by MaPS so no choice. Noted some concerns at the level of training for anyone remotely involved in debt advice – eg receptionists. They have had people at exit interviews citing screen time for learning as being a major barrier to wanting to work in the team. She suggested some push back to CA to make the training more relevant and useful.

Chris (Roberts) says there is work being done on volunteering and training and making sure that what we are offering works for us. the changes in the Training department may result in a different offer. There is a volunteer sub committee working on this with 12 LCAs. There is an external consultancy involved. Whilst many of us are finding workarounds we shouldn’t have to. Chris will take back our comments and concerns to the group. Training should be focussed on skills not topics

Tina (Stevenson) wondered about the role for CA in training – we used to have a great reputation for this but now this is not the case. Modular has to be the way forward and a more engaging process with interaction and less passive e-learning. If we are clear about what we want from national that will help them and us to get to where we need to be.

Angela (Kerr) drafted a while ago a training pathway – an excellent graphic that we felt was very useful – simple and visual works well.
